Capitalism and the Environment: A Reflection

As I did more and more research for these blog posts I was able to take my research questions and narrow it down to two which were, “Is capitalism one of the main reasons as to why we’re experiencing the negative effects of climate change, and should we as consumers make small changes in our lives in order to help the environment?” This subject is jam-packed with information and so I struggled a bit with finding ones I wanted to utilize for each blog post. The funny thing was that in the process of writing these blog posts my stance on the subject actually ended up changing when I had no intentions for it to. When I began writing my blogs for the best arguments I went into it firmly believing it’s all up to the consumer to shop consciously but after I did more research it made the most sense to me for companies to step up and take responsibility for what they’ve done to the earth.

The drafts for these blogs were always the hardest part. I would sit and stare at one sentence for what felt like forever before I actually got in the groove and started writing. I would always procrastinate for this reason and my procrastination is actually what helped me look forward to utilizing my feedback. Because I did most of my drafts in such a rush I knew there was room for improvement so I don’t think utilizing feedback was that big of a challenge for me.

Once I began drafting my research essay I was completely stumped-I didn’t even want to write a draft. After getting the hang of all the blog posts I found it really difficult to start writing an essay for an academic audience. Again, I sat in front of my screen for quite a while but getting help from my peers made it easier and I ended up finishing the essay.

Before taking English 216 I would never actually take the time to think about what I want to write and plan it all out. In high school I was conditioned to write as much as I can in 40 minutes so creating rough drafts was hard for me. This class has definitely helped improve both my research and writing skills. Before I never went in depth for my research and when I wrote I never took a step back to see how I wanted my work to be formatted so I’m really thankful I took this class. With this being my first english college class I know I’ll utilize things I’ve learned from here in the future.
